2020 will probably be remembered most for Covid-19 and the devastating effect it had on so many businesses, none more so than independent retailers. Despite three lockdowns, the businesses of Clifton Village continued to show tremendous resilience and adaptability, however the huge increase in online shopping was beginning to threaten the survival of the high street.

My work

The support of local shoppers was needed more than ever, and this was a specific project in conjunction with the BID Clifton team to promote the Village as a Christmas destination. It was not going to be easy, particularly as time was of the essence, but as soon as I was asked, I was keen to get involved.
My remit was to oversee the planning and execution of the ‘Shop Clifton Village’ campaign, including the creation of content and design management of all promotional activities.
This included:
– A four-page spread in the December 2020 issue of The Bristol Magazine
– Three, full page adverts in The Bristol Evening Post
– A four-page, through-the-door leaflet drop, to 28,000 households
– Posters in business windows across Clifton Village encouraging shoppers to support the neighbourhood

‘Together we can make a difference’ was the message conveyed to the customers of the shops, salons, cafes, restaurants, and bars of Clifton Village – so next time they were tempted to head to Amazon – they instead took a moment to look at what was on offer, on their doorstep.

This campaign was planned and executed in a period of a few weeks, as soon as it became clear it was not going to be possible for retailers to enjoy the normal run up to Christmas. It received great feedback and I truly hope it went someway to helping local businesses in what was an extremely challenging time.
